Balbir Singh Sr., a three-time Olympic gold medalist hockey veteran, died this morning in a private hospital in Mohali, Punjab. He was 95 and has a daughter Sushbir and three sons Kanwalbir, Karanbir, Gurbir.
Abhijit Singh, director of Fortis Hospital in Mohali, said he breathed his last at 6.30 am
He was admitted to the hospital on 8 May and was in a semi-comatose condition from 18 May and developed a blood clot in his brain after being hospitalized for bronchial pneumonia with high fever.
One of the greatest athletes in the country, Balbir Sr. was the only Olympics to have been selected by the International Olympic Committee in modern Olympic history.
His world record for most goals scored by a man in the Olympic men's hockey final is still unbeaten.
